Once again, it's October and it's my pleasure to bring you a few lines from this great American novel by John Gardner. Most of it refers to old fashioned electioneering, which possibly hasn't changed that much. Some of it (such as the 'unlocking') refers  to local customs in the Vermont region. Enjoy. JPM.
