8/26/21 From Two Leaf Gallery: "Stick with the Beatles", one of my parents observed keenly, while watching news footage of the Rolling Stones arrive in New York, possibly 1964: "These guys are trouble". Trouble notwithstanding, it's been a long way down rock and roll from there; the Stones have been friends to us the whole time, until drummer Charlie Watts passed on Tuesday. We first saw them perform on a local program called the Clay Cole Show, where they honored us with "Not Fade Away' and "Tell Me". Along the way, even if you weren't a musician, you could learn from hearing the way Charlie developed his style from song to song and album to album. Many times, it's a subtle touch: In "Angie", for example. hear the way he skims the cymbal when Mick sings the title of the song, as if to underline it. For a more monumental Charlie, try "Salt of the Earth", off "Beggars Banquet". "Charlie's a mover", Keith Richards once observed, "we couldn't do it without him". My guess is that the band will find a way to fill any current performing commitments; in the meantime, RIP Charlie Watts: our condolences to his family and friends, and to his mates Jagger, Richards, Wood, Wyman and Taylor. JPM.
